Orange and Oat Scones [Nov. 15th, 2009|04:10 pm]
101cookbooks

I spent most of the week under my favorite blanket on the couch - sniff, cough, cough, sniff, sneeze, repeat. The good news is I'm on the mend, and after a short walk today something tells me I wasn't alone in my misery. It seems as if half the city is coughing into their elbows. So yeah, last week was all about the small victories for me - going downstairs to get the mail, finishing a load of laundry (as in one), writing letters, and eventually, as I was starting to feel better, making a batch of orange and oat scones from the My Nepenthe cookbook. If only you could have been there when they came out of the oven, yum.

They were good later too though. I nibbled at a golden corner of one of the scones a couple hours after they came out of the oven, then four hours later, then six - they seemed to be improving with age.

In fact I wish I had one right now. In hindsight, I should have frozen some of the dough, then baked them off a few at a time.

I'm so looking forward to trying more from Romney's new book, she includes an eclectic mix of recipes including the full range of mains, soups, side salads. But it's the sweets and breakfast recipes that I suspect will make an appearance in my kitchen in the near future - the wheat germ buttermilk hotcakes, persimmon pudding cake, and the triple berry pie.

If you haven't seen the book yet, look around for it. I think it's just starting to show up in stores. It's just the sort of cookbook that takes you to another place and time - beautifully designed and photographed, and the story she tells of her life and legacy at Nepenthe in Big Sur is very special. For those of you who love the Tessa Kiros cookbooks, aesthetically this book is similar in spirit.

unnegative numbers... [Nov. 14th, 2009|01:40 am]

[Current Music |eiscafe - "negative numbers"]

and some days you can actually do it. when inspiration strikes, putting aside everything else you should be doing, even when a nap would prove such blessed relief to your tired, weary soul. i was chomping at the bit to get out of class as about halfway through i was hit by a motherload of ideas, furiously scribbling down notes on scraps of paper so i wouldn't forget. and coming home at 4 and working for 7 hours straight, having to remind and force myself to eat at some point. was thinking it would only take about 3, but then started trying a bunch of other things out, and got basically nothing of the million other things i need to be doing done. but that's fine right now. and although the sounds aren't completely doing what i want them to, and i only have headphones to mix with or the old method of burning cds then making mix notes, repeat, until you get it right, if i haven't quite achieved a little piece of pop magic then at least it's close enough that i know one day it will be the brilliant pop song i know it to be.

when i was finished i thought i'd go check out the pipettes dj set at cargo but upon arriving and seeing the queue/line, i returned straight home, though my luck with buses was not all that. though i was full of such joyful creative energy i walked most of the way there and back. and now feel such tired contentment.

last night i was trying to think of the top 10 songs of the decade, which is going to be very tough. the only two i was pretty sure about were lifestyle's "come on" and saint etienne's "teenage winter".

You don't have to be a baseball fan to appreciate this story about Pittsburgh Pirate's pitcher Dock Ellis' acid ride through a no-hitter in 1970. No Mas is showcasing an animated rendition of the story as told by Ellis himself which is definitely worth a viewing.

It's on YouTube over here.

Additions and improvements for Paid Feature [Nov. 12th, 2009|02:11 pm]

We've made some additions and improvements to Notes!

The Notes feature has been added to two action-taking pages:
  • You can now add a Note directly on the Add a friend page - handy if you'd like to mark down where you met them or another name you know them by!
  • On the Ban and unban users page (under Account -> Privacy) you can now add a Note, including to a group of users all banned at the same time (so that next year you won't need to ask yourself "hey, why did I ban these guys?")

Other changes:
  • When you're viewing your existing Notes they're grayed out; click in a field to activate it to change the text (this page can be found from the header by using Profile -> Manage Notes)
  • Changes to editing:
    • When you're going to create a new Note but one already exists, you'll get a warning that you're editing an existing Note
    • You can now delete a note from the "Edit note" pop-up in the hover menu
    • You can now delete notes for multiple selected users on the Manage notes page
    • When you change Notes on "Ban|unban users" page, they can be edited and saved with "Save Changes" button

QUE MAS, BIEN O NO [Nov. 12th, 2009|10:26 am]

ohsnap
I moved to Colombia a month and a half ago to work for this NGO:
http://www.pbi-colombia.org/
I'll be here for a year at least.

I don't know where to start. I want to write about everything that's going on in my life, all the crazy political stuff, and the heartbreak, but there's so much to explain that I get overwhelmed and don't bother. I need to vent, and I need people to understand what's happening here, so I figure, I'll talk about it a little at a time and if anyone reads this, they'll put the pieces together over time.

I guess I'll start with the big one. Colombia is the country with the second most internally displaced people - internal refugees. The country with the most, is Sudan, with 5 million due to the Darfur conflict.
Colombia has about 3-4 million, and rising. Why isn't George Clooney talking about Colombia?

The context of this human rights disaster is really complicated, so I am going to give you a rural example. I'll explain the urban situation another time.

In the 90s, an afro-colombian community on the pacific coast was displaced when a paramilitary operation tortured and killed several members of the community, including children, and dismembered people using a chainsaw. They cut off the head of the community leader and played soccer with it. While this was happening, a US-bought Colombian army helicopter supervised from above. The people, in fear, fled their community. Instead of displacing to another rural area, or a city, like millions of other people have, they decided to live in the jungle until they could return to their land. When they did return, a corporation had cut down all the trees and replaced them with their monocrop.

This has happened many times. So many times that it has produced literally millions of internal refugees. Sometimes the monocrop is Bananas. Sometimes its African Palm. This is the other face of free trade.

Today, these chainsaw massacres aren't happening as much. The Awa indigenous in the south are being massacred, but in most areas people run from the slightest threat. Someone says to a mother, "I'll kill all of you, from the big to small," and the family flees.

All of this is justified by the state, the army, whoever, by saying it's guerilla. We have a term here, signaling, which means you finger someone to be a subversive, to be a communist, to be a guerrillero, and this can end their life. This justifies all kinds of violence and abuse. People are tossed in jail with fake evidence of guerilla ties. The president, following Bush's example, has said "if you're not with us, you're against us." Human rights workers are signaled constantly. The president even signaled United Nations workers.
One of the people responsible for the massacre I described above said, "I didn't want to kill those children but they would grow up to be FARC."

People are fighting for their right to return, but it's a slow process. They are under threat all the time. One of the things I do in my job is accompany organizations fighting for it

Not thinking about where I am from is a privilege. I don't think about what it would mean to be driven from my home to a strange place, by violence and fear. Our identities are tied to where we are from, but this is something I never think about, because I don't have to.

  • 07:57 I think I'm going to have to plan on hitting the office around 10. Trying to make the 7:49 from Grafton is going to be near impossible #fb #
  • 09:05 So, apparently the Wi-Fi on the MBTA Worcester line is about as reliable as tin cans and string. Great. #
  • 09:40 @mmartel Nah. It's just gonna take a little trial and error to figure out the best schedule for when I'm in the office. #
  • 09:41 @mmartel and actually, since about 5 minutes after I posted about the Wi-Fi, it's been fine. #
  • 10:24 @mmartel so far, it's great. And really, flakey Wi-Fi on the train might help me focus on work a little more :-) #
  • 10:53 @mattgemmell Good to know I'm not the only one still having trouble keeping my vi muscle memory out of other apps. #
  • 14:27 @janeylicious good to hear I'm not the only one that feels that way. It's bad how many people have no idea who Ken Thompson is today. #
  • 14:29 Just got back from seeing what will soon be the new @ApperianCorp offices. Can't wait to move in. #
