My first attempt at baking any kind of dessert-y type thing turned out pretty ok, I think. In exchange for services offered (a car ride to Fairway Market), I baked a traditional (don't call it trashy) 'Nilla Wafer Banana Pudding. I MacGyvered a double boiler out of a pot, a stainless steel bowl, and some tin foil for the custard (note to self: use whole milk next time), and discovered how easy it is to make meringue (which I'll probably put on everything in the near future).

Pretty, huh?

That was my only real accomplishment of the weekend. I tried to see "Edge of Heaven" at Lincoln Center on Saturday afternoon, but I took the train all the way uptown just to find out it was sold out. So I came home and watched a "Henry Fool" dvd instead. Also on the movie front, I just ordered the 3-dvd box set of "Leningrad Cowboys Go America", and am VERY much hoping it's not a waste of fifty bucks.

hmm. thats quite the offer. i see us going to fairway as we were once boston bffs time, its like doing laundry together only i dont have to worry about you touching my hands when we fold sheets.
you should try to steam a lobster for me, so i can eat it in the car on the way to fairway. marci can hold the butter while i drive.

I can't imagine, if you had the knowledge of what the leningrad cowboys is/are, that it will be any sort of waste.

Leningrad Cowboys were the first slavic/gypsy rock band that I latched onto back as a lad in high school. The Red Elvises and Gogol Bordello just never quite made me feel that same, special way.

Can you please bake more things my grandma used to make? A nice apple pie next would be fantastic.

You mean you knew about the Leningrad Cowboys back in high school? How did I miss out on this for so long? Was it more widespread that I realize?

I first heard of them in... '99, I think? So not THAT way back. I mean, it was after Six String Samurai, so the whole slavic/gypsy rock thing had already had its first big moment in the sun. I guess I never really got into the whole rockabilly angle though and really soaked up how utterly absurd the Leningrad Cowboys are. Still do, actually.

I actually thought the accepted name for that dish was "Trailer Park Pudding". But yes, it is very tasty. I like to make it in the spring.

Mmm. If you're ever in the mood for a variation, they have one here in the UK that's called "banoffee" pudding. It's basically this, but with TOFFEE too! Mmm.

I might make that just so I can say "banoffee."
