Overheard in Arlington, MA:

[the scene: two elderly women standing in front of me at the registration counter at the dentist's office]

EW1: Is that your bag on the ground over there?
EW2: Yes, that's my lunch
EW1: I'm going to take it!
EW1 "scurries" over and tries to grab the bag
EW2: Don't steal my lunch!

[a few seconds later]

EW2: Oh, I used to drive. Now I always take cabs.
EW1: I'll drive you. If I see you outside I'll pick you up. I like white people.

Oh man, old people. They so crazy. Going to the dentist has never been so thrilling.

I used to go to a dentist that had the same two ancient Buddhist monks sitting in the lobby every time I went there. This is in an office building in Charles River Park, mind you. Completely bizarre.

Not really. That was the dentist who botched my gum surgery. I felt pretty ripshit after that.

Was EW1 a woman of color? Because if not that makes the story all the more hilarious.

My dentist likes to unburden himself to me. The last time I went in for a procedure, he talked about the high suicide rate amongst dentists in the US. It was weird.

At least his office doesn't smell like stale disinfectants.

Wow, you actually get to talk to your dentist? My hygienist works on me for a half hour, then the dentist comes in for three minutes, does a quick look over, and then jets.

Did you ever make a final decision about a new bag? I'm in the market now too and I'm trying to narrow down my choices.

Nope, didn't get anything yet. Checked out Brooklyn Industries in person and didn't like anything. Checked out Manhattan Portage and am intrigued, but not totally sold. I might like something that's not quite such a rough canvas feel.

I happened to be in a photo supply store and saw Crumpler bags that were pretty rad, but they were specifically geared toward holding photo gear. Thought that might be interesting for you.

Yeah Crumpler makes really nice photo bags. I'm pretty much set in that department though; I need something to hold my laptop plus a few misc. gadgets and papers.
